Anthony Philip Coetzer-Liversage, Ph.D.

Dr. Anthony Coetzer-Liversage is an accomplished academic-practitioner specializing in implementation science, particularly in bridging the research-to-practice gap in mental and behavioral health, substance use prevention, and health promotion. Currently, he serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Rhode Island, where he engages in empirical research, mentors students, and develops mixed methodologies. He earned a Ph.D. in Public Health from Kent State University, specializing in Prevention Science (Social & Behavioral Science), as well as an MPH in Biostatistics and a Graduate Certificate in Qualitative Research. His academic journey includes a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship in Substance Use Education, Prevention, and Treatment from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Fulbright Scholarship, and a Master’s in Practical Theology (Pastoral Care and Counseling). In South Africa, Dr. Coetzer-Liversage was a registered Clinical Pastoral Therapist and Employee Assistance Practitioner.

Currently, he is the Director of Healthy Futures Impact at Serve Minnesota, where he leads research projects, updates grant requirements, and oversees program evaluation for AmeriCorps initiatives. His research collaborations involve projects funded by the NIH, SAMHSA, and the National Association of County and City Health Officials, and he has also consulted for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Dr. Coetzer-Liversage is a dedicated researcher focused on public health, substance use interventions, and community safety, emphasizing health behavior models, occupational health, and substance use prevention strategies. He prioritizes collaborative research on international projects to deepen understanding of public health challenges and is committed to advancing practical applications that ensure the effective implementation of evidence-based interventions in real-world settings. His passion for improving health outcomes drives his innovative approaches and community engagement.

As a Senior Training Consultant with Applied Prevention Sciences International (APSI), Dr. Coetzer-Liversage contributes to global capacity development in substance use prevention. He is also a contributing editor for the Journal of Community Safety and Well-Being and has authored numerous publications in academic journals, focusing on implementation science, health behavior models, and substance use prevention. Additionally, he continues to deliver training programs for prevention professionals worldwide.
